A rich heritage fueled by curiosity

Our story began in 1963 when Herbert & Mona Hyman decided to open a small store in Brentwood, California. Falling in love with the rich and nuanced flavors of the artisanal coffee they discovered during their trips to Europe, they wanted to share them with their local communities.

Guided by their passion, they started offering gourmet beans from far-flung places like Costa Rica, Colombia and Kenya to let their customers enjoy the diverse flavors and perspectives from around the world. Soon, their vision would spark a movement for gourmet coffee and turn their little store into the global phenomenon it is today.

We individually, small batch roast our beans to bring out the unique, original flavor of every bean.

1963

Herbert Hyman founded The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf as a coffee service for offices. Three years later, he opened the very first store in Southern California to bring the flavors of the world to his neighborhood.

1974

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf grew to 10 cafés in Southern California. Eager to let his customers enjoy truly authentic and unique blends, he began adding exotic teas to the menu.

1987

History was made when a barista invented the original ICE BLENDED® drink at our Westwood, California café.

1996

We turned global and expanded into Asia. Within two years, 29 cafés were opened across Singapore and Malaysia. And in 2005, we established the Caring Cup® Global Charity Program with the aim of giving back to our communities.

2019

With a remarkable presence of over 1,100 cafés worldwide, we joined the Jollibee Group of Companies, marking the start of something special.

2023

We launched HomeGrounds, our global headquarters and Innovation Experience Centre, in Singapore to continue serving an endless variety of flavors and creations.

Chief Marketing Officer

With a passion for transforming businesses, growing brands and building winning teams and close to 30 years of extensive experience in the food service industry in both company-owned and franchised environments, Sanjiv is responsible for driving business growth for The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the Americas and India.

He was formerly Chief Operations Officer for Sweetgreen where he led the Field Operations, Food Safety & QA, and Ops Services and Innovation teams. He played a key role in shaping the strategy and direction of the brand as an integral member of its leadership team.

Additionally, he was also the Chief of Operations for Dine Brands where he was instrumental in the turnaround of the brand. Prior to that, he had a multi-disciplinary global career with Yum Brands, spanning assignments in Dallas, London, and New Delhi.
